About

Live Fit Blog is a gathering place for those who want to build better lives by getting stronger, fitter, and smarter.  It’s about discovering what matters most to you, and organizing your life in such a way to balance those things against the demands we all face.  Because, let’s face it – life is hectic.  It’s crazy and helter-skelter.  We’re all looking for ways to tame the insanity.

What you can expect to find

Live Fit Blog features three articles a week on what it means to live a balanced life.  These are wide-ranging subjects, and could cover topics such as:  health and fitness, motivation, family, relationships, and inspiration.  My passion is learning — about everything.  But please understand, I’m an amateur.  That’s what makes it fun.

Who Am I?

I’m a regular 37-year old guy who’s married with kids.  Like most people I suspect, I’m trying to balance a full-time job, the demands of family life (spouse, kids, house), fitness, and all my other interests as well.  This blog is about my journey, as I try to find out what works for me, (and what doesn’t) when it comes to weight loss, fitness, managing my health, and life in general.  I have no ambition to be a professional athlete.  I simply want to understand how to improve my quality of life by the thoughtful application of common sense principles.  Getting and staying fit is a goal to achieve so I can accomplish all the other things I want to do; not an end unto itself.

At 6′2″ tall, five years ago I weighed 242 lbs, and had a BMI of 31.1.  I started off trying to lose weight by simply exercising daily.  Over the course of my journey, I have completed a handful of 5K races, one 10K race, one half marathon, and two triathlons.  What I’ve discovered though, is that it takes more than just exercise to lose weight.  Choices of food and weight loss are tied together, while exercise is required for fitness.  It takes both for a balanced lifestyle.  I have since altered my workouts between bodyweight training, running, swimming, cycling, and resistance training, and have come to believe in the advantages of cross training to build overall fitness.  Since I have started varying my workout routine, I have experienced fewer injuries and find more pleasure in my workouts.  Recently, I have paid a great deal more attention to nutrition, blood work, blood pressure, medication, and risk factors for illness.

The amazing thing about getting one aspect of your life in order is that it seems to be contagious.  As one thing starts falling in place, others seem to follow suit.  Mine started with fitness and health.  From there, it evolves into money and parenting, job and life priorities.  I suspect many people follow a similar path, and would love to learn their stories as well.

So, please, take a look around, and see what you think.  Hopefully, there are things here that you find interesting.  If so, please join the discussion.
