Many of the readers may not know that both Tennessee and Kentucky have suffered through a flood last weekend. This past Saturday was the running of the 2010 Kentucky Derby, which was run through serious rainfall. Meanwhile, a few hours away, we were just trying to avoid being washed away.
My Weekend Run, And Some Flood Pictures
I went for a run on Wednesday at my favorite park in town. The running trail includes a 1.25-mile gravel paved loop, and hooks up with the greenways, which are under construction. Imagine my surprise when I got to the half-mile point, and ran out of trail!
The funny thing about this picture is the fact that you can see how the running trail emerges from the water on the other side. But I guess that’s to be expected after having over 10-inches of rain in a 36-hour period.
Surprisingly, the park was pretty busy, which is a testament to how quickly things can return to normal. There were baseball games going on, and several runners out as well. I back-tracked and ran to the other side of the newly formed lake, and took this picture.
The funny thing about this picture is the park bench, which looks like it was put there to enjoy the lake. Which, of course, doesn’t belong! If you look at the trees in the distance, its easy to see just how high the water had gotten. The other thing about this scene is the guys who aren’t in the picture. This area is actually a frisbee golf course, and a few guys were out trying to play a round. They aren’t in the picture, but it wasn’t working out too well for them.
The experts are saying this event qualifies as a “hundred year flood.” We didn’t get it nearly as bad as our neighbors to the south in Nashville, but it’ll take a good while for us to dig out from under this one.

Hi Greg,
I enjoyed reading some of your articles. I read the Why Does Fat Taste Good? and Comparing Almond Butter vs Peanut Butter, but I could not comment on them because it appeared that the comments section was closed.
Anyway, I bet it will take about a week for the “lake” to dry out after all this heavy rain.
@Matthew – Thanks for stopping by. Yeah – we’re expecting it to take a while before things dry out completely. Folks south of us got it worse though.
Feel for all who have been affected by all the flooding, hope things dry up for you all soon.
@Ron – Thanks. Appreciate the thoughts.
