On Having Choices When Eating

I’ve been less disciplined with my eating habits lately, and my weight has floated up a few pounds.  I could feel it when I stepped on the scales, and know I haven’t been as disciplined with my choices when eating.  Now to get that back in order…choices when eating On Having Choices When Eating

On Having Choices When Eating

I’m starting to observe the trend of complacency in my eating habits.  I’ve started getting comfortable with my weight, and am finding an increased tendency to partake of the little sin foods that crop up during the day.  As a result, as my weight has crept up over the last few weeks, I’ve realized I’m being less disciplined.

For instance, we recently had visitors in at work, and have had leftover snack foods floating around the office over the last few days.  Kettle-cooked potato chips, sodas and the like.  I realized this morning that I’ve been wandering over to those tables and grabbing a handful here and there, without really thinking about it.  Grazing, I guess.

I’ve been justifying this behavior, by telling myself “… yep, got my run in at lunch, so this is OK…” or “I’ll just have one…”

Not good.

Researchers tell us that having healthy eating choices available to us makes us “feel” better about our choices, so we can have something healthy to eat, and then be more likely to go indulge in that chocolate bundt cake sitting in the break room.  Just to pick an example…

This is the same reason many fast food restaurants make so-called “healthy” menu items available to their visitors.  Psychologists have observed that a consumer that has considered eating something healthy is more likely to go ahead and eat the indulgence food.

Over the last few weeks, that would be me.

I could justify it by noting that March is a busy birthday month for my family, with cake and ice cream galore all month long.  I could also say that Easter is upon us, with chocolate bunnies popping out of the woodwork.  I could even blame it on stress over my youngest son’s seizures.  But that’s all justification, I suppose.  The truth is, I just haven’t been very disciplined over the last several weeks.

So its time to get re-focused.  Getting back on track with good eating habits, and coupling that with strategically timed intermittent fasting will go a long way to straightening things out.

And throw out that chocolate bundt cake.

Do you catch yourself losing sight of your weight loss goals?  If so, do the foods available to you impact your choices when eating?  Sound off.
