The Perks Of A Run In The Cold

IMG 0073 225x300 The Perks Of A Run In The ColdYesterday was to be my second run of the New Year, and the entire U.S. is blanketed by a layer of frigid arctic air.  I, too, am one of those poor souls forced to suffer through the frigid weather.  But there are advantages to a run in the cold, as well.

At least, that’s what I keep telling myself.

The Perks Of A Run In The Snow

When I talked with my wife after lunch yesterday, she asked what I had done for lunch.  I caught some berating for going for a run in the cold weather, as she was concerned about my getting hurt.  But, as temperatures expected to approach 0-degrees F this weekend (-18-degrees C for the metric crowd), I decided to take advantages of the balmy 28-degrees F for a short run.

Despite some obligatory whining on my part, I actually don’t mind to run in the cold.  Wind and cold together kind of stink — but cold in conjunction with some snow can be very peaceful.  With 1-2 inches of fresh snow on the ground, and a light snow falling at lunchtime, it made for a peaceful run.  The freshly falling snow makes you feel like you’re the only person in the world.  As you can see from this picture of my run, it would be easy to believe I was.

If you’re an outdoorsman, another little nugget are the occasional obvious wildlife tracks.  These forced me to stop and snap a pic of the tracks in the snow.  Just moments later, I jumped a rabbit out of the fence row to the left of the above picture.

I stopped a handful of times to snap a few pics with my new iPhone.  Although I’m not too impressed with the camera (2MP), it’s a device, and it has the potential to simplify some aspects of my life.  I’m currently trying out a few of the apps for fitness geeks.  We’ll see if I’m disciplined enough to make good use of them.

I get the whole running in the snow thing… the peace, the freezing air, the beautiful scenes. The only bit I’m not keen on is the slippery ice!
