5 Sure-Fire Tips To Beat The Christmas Blues

I recently ran across an article on the subject of loneliness and depression, where researchers found that loneliness can spread in a manner similar to the flu.  Scientists discovered that people who are lonely tend to “transmit” their emotions to those around them, which in turn, further hastens their isolation.  This got me thinking about how “the Christmas blues” are such a problem for so many people.

1.  Lower Your Expectations

This sounds rather “Grinch-like,” but so many people expect the Christmas season to be a life-changing time of year.  Society places extraordinary pressure on us to create the “perfect” Christmas.  It’s an unrealistic expectation.  Those little annoyances that crop up in everyday life will still exist during the Christmas season.  Accept it.  Attempting to deny those things only increases your stress levels.  There is no such thing as a “perfect” Christmas.

2.  Keep Up With Your Fitness Routine

The culmination of parties, family activities, vacation time, and overall chaos of the holidays tends to disrupt our regular routines.  It’s easy to get in a cycle of overeating and letting your exercise routine slip by the wayside.  Be certain to carve out time to slip in a workout here and there.  It’s a proven fact that exercise reduces stress and increases levels of mood-boosting hormones.

3.  Give Some Time To Charity

When asked “What would you like for Christmas?…” most people I know struggle.  There’s a reason for that.  So many of us have an excess at Christmas, and taking the opportunity to give to others takes a bit of the consumerism out of the Christmas season and places the emphasis back where it belongs.  On giving.  This is especially important for your kids.  Provide themwith a chance to give their time and effort to others and you’ll likely be rewarded many times over.

4.  Set A Budget

Again, this sounds rather “Scrooge-like” but the reality is that most people can’t go out and buy everything for everyone.  It’s fun to pull out our favorite Christmas presents for guys, but that’s not what Christmas is all about.  Accept this fact and work with what you have.  If the emphasis of Christmas is placed where it belongs, then the gifts will fall out where they should.  Otherwise, you’ll find yourself on a never-ending rollercoaster of debt repayments just to cover the bills of Christmas past.

5.  Establish Traditions

Building family traditions provides the glue to hold families together.  It establishes a sense of familiarity and sense of security that transcends the insanity that the Christmas season can entail.  They needn’t be fancy, expensive, or time consuming, but they need to be something everyone can count on.  Ask everyone to list the things they are thankful for at Christmas, so they can honor them.  Build your family traditions and then honor them.

Christmas can be a wonderful time of year, but it can also be stressful and challening.  Taking a few moments to step back and put it in perspective is a worthwhile exercise.  So, the next time you’re feeling stressed, try these tips to beat the Christmas blues.

I’d agree with most of these tips Greg. Treat the holidays like everyday. It’s a different date of the calendar. You might spend more time with the family but continue with the routine. Enjoy each day like it’s a special day.
