The reality is that most men have a pretty scattered array of interests.  Just like women, we play the role of husbands, fathers, competitors, hunters, providers, and a host of others as well.  But, as the old saying goes, above all we’re just little boys grown tall.  So, if you’re looking for a gift idea for the male, fitness geek in your life, this might be your place.

Christmas Gift Ideas For Men – 2009 Edition

1.  Kindle Wireless Book Reader

I have to admit that when these first came out, I couldn’t imagine their appeal.  The tactile sensation of holding a book just can’t be beaten.  But, as I’ve spent more time in airports this year, the appeal has become apparent.  After all, lugging the latest 750-page copy of The Wheel of Time through security is not only inconvenient, its hell on the book, too.

2.  ASICS Men’s GT-2140 Running Shoe

This is, in my opinion, the best all around running shoe on the planet.  When I originally started running, I was in the ASICS Men’s GEL-Kayano, which is a stability shoe.  However, after losing 50-pounds, my knees started hurting.  A trip to a Nashville runners store for an analysis of my running stride showed that it had changed, probably due to the weight loss.  They pointed me toward the GT-2140 and I’ve been wearing this shoe (or its successors) ever since.  Great neutral running shoe.

3.  Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch

Allows runners to track their distance and heart rate, with information readily downloadable to your computer for detailed analysis.  Great gift for the fitness-engineer/scientist in your life.  Useful for watching exertion levels in triathlon training and at the gym, to make sure your heart rate stays up during training.

4.  Under Armour® ColdGear® Mock Turtleneck

Most runners will tell you that running in cold weather can be pretty miserable.  I had already been using some of the heat gear, so last year, I broke down and went for the ColdGear.  This stuff is great, and doubles wonderfully for other outdoor activities – hunting, fishing, or just fighting your way to a cab in the cold.

5.  New Balance Unisex Lightning Dry Lo-Cut 3-Pack Sock

I would highly recommend eliminating plain old cotton to reduce the risk of blisters.  Next to a good fitting pair of shoes, switching to synthetic wicking materials for socks is one of the best moves you can make.

6.  The Runner’s Handbook

A great resource for new and experienced runners.

7.  Once a Runner: A Novel

A great story about the power of running.

8.  Lambskin Front Pocket Wallet

Two years ago, I switched from carrying a back pocket wallet.  Pretty every much every medical expert will tell you that most guy’s penchance for carrying a wallet in their back pocket dooms them to back pain eventually.  Has it helped me?  I don’t know for sure, but why take chances?
