About 30 months ago, our local indoor pool closed. The pool I had been training at was adjacent to a local elementary school, and it was an old local county pool that had been covered with an inflatable dome. The school needed the land for expansion, so the pool was scrapped. Being the only public indoor pool in the area, it was a huge blow to both educational swim programs and local residents alike.
Fortunately, the decision was made to build another indoor public pool to replace the one we lost, but that’s been very slow going. Construction was started about a year ago, and the facility finally opened on Friday. The intent is for the facility to be used by local school swim teams and residents, alike.
I’ve been struggling to fit in swims at the local outdoor aquatic center during summer months, but it’s been extremely difficult. Aquatic centers are really geared more toward kids and play, rather than lap swimming. Even in the late afternoons (when areas are reserved for lap swim), its very difficult to accomplish. So, I have it in my plans to check out the new indoor facility this week. Reports coming in from people “in the know” say it’s gorgeous.
Wish me luck!
