Post-Holiday Recovery – The Day After Christmas
The day after Christmas is finally upon us
Our family is in the process of recovering from the process of opening Christmas presents. The day after Christmas is known in many countries as Boxing Day, and in times past, was the day to give gifts to those less fortunate. In the United States, its primarily significance now is as day for returning unwanted gifts and hitting the sales. For me, I’ll avoid the stores the morning after Christmas and let the kids play with their newfound toys, while I try to recover from the post-Holiday orgy of gift opening.
The Post-Holiday Recovery
If your kids are anything like mine, they spend the entire year looking forward to Christmas. My youngest has already started planning next Christmas. Be still my beating heart! I think many of us get caught up in the stress of the holidays – trying to make our children’s holiday perfect. This year has been especially difficult, with the economic concerns that weigh upon us, as parents. But, if you’re like me, the post-holiday period is when my real vacation actually begins. All the gifts have been opened, and we can sit back and relax — but wait! We’re now in danger of getting caught in the post-holiday blues. What?
It’s not uncommon for people to suffer a letdown the day after Christmas. It can happen to kids and parents alike. We’ve spent the entire year building up to Christmas, and now that its over. If you seriously over-indulged at the dinner table, that can further contribute to the problem. So, how to beat it? Get back into your routine. Its a proven fact that exercise helps improve mood and relieve even the mildest symptoms of depression. It works in your kids, as well. Take them out someplace to run and play. Better yet, play with them. You will be laughing and back into the real holiday spirit before you know it.
