- Competitive Eating? Unbelievable.
Posted on Thursday, November 6th, 2008 in Food – Comments: (1)I was looking through the news articles a few days ago, and the following headline caught my attention: “Death by steamed rice bun: Competitive eater dies.” Sounds like a sick joke, right? But intrigued, I decided to take a look. After all, the story was carried by Scientific American. Well, I was wrong. This is not a sick joke, but a true story.
- On The Subject Of Splitting Wood
Posted on Monday, November 24th, 2008 in Kids – Comments: (2)Today, I did something I haven’t done in a long while. I split wood with a wood splitting maul. I’m tired. Our primary heat source when I was a kid growing up was wood. I have vivid memories of my brother and I going with my Dad to gather wood during the summer months. He would drop dead trees, or cut up deadfalls, and we would load the large logs up into the truck and take them home for splitting into smaller, manageable pieces.
- Smart Choice Food Labels — Why?
Posted on Monday, November 3rd, 2008 in Nutrition – Comments: (3)An article hit the news recently about ‘Smart Choice’ food labels. Intrigued, I decided to look into these so-called “smarter” labels. Apparently, the Keystone Group has taken it upon themselves to develop a new food labeling program. The program isn’t mandatory, so food companies can choose to participate. Foods that fall within certain nutritional guidelines will get access to specific labels that indicate they are healthier choices than their non-label-ridden cousins.
- Venison Recipes
Posted on Tuesday, November 11th, 2008 in Food – Comments: (2)Many people have concerns about the flavor of venison, and worry about the “gamey” flavor. While it is true that venison has a different flavor than beef or pork, this is largely affected by handling, both in the field and at the processor. For several years, my wife and children were adverse to consuming ground venison, complaining about the taste and texture.
- Week In Review — November 23, 2008
Posted on Sunday, November 23rd, 2008 in Review – Comments: (2)Well, I haven’t been able to touch on my fitness goals as much as I’d like this week due to illness. As my wife would say, I’ve had funk. What that translates into is a cold. Unfortunately, I don’t feel comfortable taking pseudoephedrine because I feel that it drives my blood pressure up. The only other thing on the market for congestion is phenylephrine, and from what I’ve read, it doesn’t actually work unless you take about five times as much as the recommended dosage.
