"Sex In The City" Linked To — Teen Sex
Male Disclaimer: I have to start off by stating that I never watched this television show.
So this weekend, my wife and I were searching for a movie to watch at home, and noticed that “Sex In The City” was on. She had heard from her friends that it was a funny movie, so we decided to watch it. The premise of the movie is that the four main characters of the show get together for Sarah Jessica Parker’s wedding, and she gets jilted at the aisle. I won’t say more about the movie, other than to state that it is very racey. Let me reiterate this. I do mean very. This isn’t something to watch with your kids on the room. And if you’re easily offended, you probably shouldn’t watch it either.
So, why am I writing about this? The very next morning, this new article showed up in my news reader: ‘Gossip Girl’, ‘Sex and the City,’ other risqué TV linked to risky teenage sex. There were about six other sources carrying the same article. So researchers discovered that teenagers who watch shows filled with sexually charged content are more likely to become pregnant than those who don’t? Shocking!
O.K. I am NOT a prude. But I have three boys, and there is no way I would want them watching shows like the movie I saw the other night. When they’re about 25 years old. Maybe then.
Of course I’m exaggerating here, but its worth thinking about this subject when you decide what sort of programming to allow in your home. If I go back to when I was a teenager (old guy plug here), we didn’t have paid television content in our household. The only programming we had available was off-air broadcasts (you know — the major networks). No cable. No satellite. We were not exposed to some of the programming that is readily available on cable television. I’m not going to suggest this is the only reason for teen pregnancy, because it isn’t. But it may be a contributor.
Think about it. Choose wisely when deciding what your children should be exposed to within the confines of your home.
