There are many ways to approach getting “fit.” One trait many people who strive for fitness share is a love of the outdoors. All of us, whether we are walkers, runners, hikers, mountain bikers, hunters, fishermen, or even golfers take a great deal of pleasure in being outdoors. The sunshine and fresh air are tonics for the ailments of life. Having said that, take a look at the following picture. Somewhere in this picture is a hidden snake. Can you find it? After you’ve searched for a moment, scroll on down.
Now, see the picture pointing out the hidden snake.
Scary, isn’t it? This picture could just as easily have been taken in a wooded city park as a country forest floor.
Make Outdoor Safety A Priority
Its important to take a moment and recall that the seasons are changing, and animals will also be altering their behavior. The above picture is an excellent demonstration of nature’s camouflage, and a reminder that we need to be aware of our surroundings. Snakes and other cold-blooded creatures will be searching for both food and sunshine as the weather cools and they prepare for hibernation.
With the relief from the summertime heat, many of us will be hitting the local and national parks. While you enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors, always keep in mind that you are sharing that space with God’s creatures, and watch for them. They don’t want to cross paths with you any more than you want to bother them.
While we’re at it, keep these rules in mind as well:
- Educate yourself about the potential dangers you could encounter where you live
- Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return
- Carry your cell phone and identification
- If you have a special medical condition (i.e. diabetes), make sure its noted in your belongings
- Take a moment and consider the potential hazards you may encounter for your activity, and what you can do to prepare for them
Obviously, these are just some basic rules to follow when you’re going to be outdoors for any period of time. Sadly enough, people often don’t take the time to consider what can go wrong, or just believe “… it won’t happen to them…” There is a wide variety of specialized equipment for whatever activity you’re going to engage in that will help you do it safely.
