I’ve spent some time on the road this week, and I’ve found that finding time to workout while traveling presents particular challenges. While you’re on business, by necessity you spend a great deal of time sitting, and your only opportunities for food are restaurants. I don’t know about other people, but eating out gives me ample opportunity to rack up the calorie count very fast.
I’ve tried to combat these challenges more lately using these tips:
- I usually pack a few nutrition bars. I particularly like the PowerBar Harvest Bars as replacements for the hotel continental breakfast. They also make great mid-morning snacks. These are very filling and pack pack a nutritional punch.
- I usually try to fit in at least one workout. Most hotels either have a small workout room, or if you ask at the front desk, you will find they have an agreement with a local gym for patrons to use their facility for a nominal fee. Usually less than $10.
This time around, I knew time would be in short supply, so I had to improvise. I recently saw a workout using resistance bands. If you’re not familiar with these, I would encourage you to take a look. They are small, compact, and can give you a surprisingly efficient workout. I don’t think they’re as good as going to a gym, but with the right level of resistance, they definitely work. Sport Fitness Advisor has a good beginners workout.
