Diet IS a four letter word
I needed to develop a diet philosophy. Making the assertion that I now had to learn about calories conjured images of diet fads and self-denial of foods that I truly enjoy. And make no mistake about it. I truly would miss my ice cream and cookies. I’m thinking to myself that there’s got to be a middle ground here.
Diet history
I had only “dieted” one time before in my life. When I first started my job, I tried “dieting” for a while. I used the Atkin’s Diet. You know it — carbohydrate restricted high protein diet. I lost weight — to the tune of 15 lbs. I kept the weight off for about 9 months, and then got burned out on it and gained the weight right back.
Diet Philosphy
Diets are fleeting. Most of the people I know, including myself, who have tried dieting view the matter as something that is to be done to lose some weight. Eventually they all get bored with it, and slip back into their prior habits. At that point, any of the weight they have lost comes right back. The other thing I had observed was the total denial of “sin” foods. I would dare say that most of us have something we truly enjoy eating that we know isn’t good for us. You’ve seen mine. When we “diet,” we usually make the decision to go “cold turkey” on those things. That dooms us to failure.
What to do?
I decided to start small. The one thing I didn’t want to happen was to find quick success, only to have it evaporate on me later. I wanted this to be permanent. So, when I looked at what I consumed on a daily basis, an easy target was soda. I usually drank two canned sodas per day, five days per week. I resolved to eliminate just one of those, and see if it made a difference.
