So we’ve established that up to this point in my life, I had never tried “weight loss.” I had generally been pretty healthy and slim. This was mostly a by-product of having been very active. I had played basketball or tennis a few times a week, so never really thought about the matter. Now I had to think about it.
My lifestyle had changed. I was a husband and father and those things were, and still are, my priorities. At least part of my weight problem was that I didn’t have the time in the evenings to go exercise. Fortunately, I found a mentor. A few guys I worked with were runners. I got the bright idea that I’d join them. I didn’t really set a goal, I was just going to “run” on my lunch break. I figured a half-hour would be a piece of cake.
The first time out, I learned I was wrong. Boy, was I wrong! See, I had never really been a “runner.” Running was a by-product of the other things I did. I hadn’t ever tried to go out and just run 5 miles at a pop. I grossly overestimated my level of conditioning.
